The month of the Precious Blood of Jesus beautifully flows forth from the month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As the side of Christ was pierced with a lance, out gushed blood and water, from which (as the early Fathers say) came the birth of the Church and the Holy Sacraments.
Indeed, it is also by the shedding of the Spotless Lamb’s Blood that our sins are forgiven and our redemption purchased. Every single drop of the Precious Blood contains in It the entirety of the Life and Love of God; His very Self is fully contained in a single droplet from the Precious Chalice. (SOURCE)
History of the devotion
The devotion to the Precious Blood began in Spain, then spread to Italy and was celebrated as a feast day from the time of Pius IX after he recovered the Papal States in 1849. Pius IX originally fixed the feast day for the first Sunday of July, but Pius X changed it to July 1st in 1914.
In 1934, Pius XI raised the the feast from duplex II classis to the rank of duplex I classis.
