Fr. John Fullerton, U.S. District Superior of the Society of Saint Pius X, has released the following prayer to be offered by the faithful prior to the episcopal consecrations. Fr. Fullerton also “calls the faithful to respond not with anxiety, but with prayer, sacrifice, and renewed confidence in divine Providence.”

Dear faithful,

The momentous decision of the Society of Saint Pius X’s (SSPX) Superior General, Don Davide Pagliarani, to consecrate new bishops for the Society has sparked much speculation. Some have reacted with alarm. Others have reacted with unfounded accusations of schism. The only sensible reaction should be one of hope in this state of necessity. As our Superior General has explained, and indeed the SSPX’s founder, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, explained concerning the first consecrations of 1988, this act is being performed for one reason: the salvation of souls, the highest law of the Church.

The Society’s apostolate has never changed. As Archbishop Lefebvre said in 1974: “That is why, without any spirit of rebellion, bitterness or resentment, we pursue our work of forming priests, with the timeless Magisterium as our guide. We are persuaded that we can render no greater service to the Holy Catholic Church, to the Sovereign Pontiff, and to posterity.” The decision to consecrate new bishops is not made out of a spirit of rebellion nor to create a parallel Church. The Society’s bishops have never purported to exercise jurisdiction within the Church. This is a matter of conscience to minister to the Catholic faithful who have come to depend on us for the means of their salvation. Our bishops serve at the behest of the Society’s Superior General for the purposes of conferring the sacraments of confirmation and ordination.

These are certainly difficult times, and our sadness at the crisis enveloping the Church is not to be mistaken for a kind of triumphalism. Instead, I insist that now, more than ever, we have recourse to prayer. This is why I am asking you, dear faithful, to join me and the Society’s clergy in a special prayer crusade beginning on Ash Wednesday and continuing through the episcopal consecrations. In addition to asking you to remember this holy act in your prayers at Holy Mass, I especially encourage you to pray the daily Rosary and to make your own sacrifices on for occasion. Below is a specific prayer and invocations to add.

Again, to quote the Archbishop: “By doing this, with the grace of God and the help of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and that of St. Joseph and St. Pius X, we are assured of remaining faithful to the Roman Catholic Church and to all the successors of Peter,” including our Holy Father, Leo XIV. In God’s good time and with the blessed intercession of Our Holy Mother, the crisis which we have confronted for over half a century will be overcome.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. John Fullerton, U.S. District Superior

Prayer

O Holy Ghost, divine Spirit of light and love, we consecrate to Thee our understanding, our hearts and our wills, our whole being for time and for eternity.  May our understanding be always submissive to Thy heavenly inspirations and to the teachings of the holy Catholic Church, of which Thou art the infallible Guide; may our hearts be ever inflamed with love of God and of neighbour; may our wills be ever conformed to the divine will, and may our whole life be a faithful imitation of the life and virtues of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, to whom with the Father and Thee be honour and glory forever.  Amen.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!
Our Lady Co-Redemptrix and Mediatrix of all graces, pray for us!
Dignare me laudare te, Virgo sacrata. Da mihi virtutem contra hostes tuos.
